Inanimate Objects
Animating the glass picture frame was by far the most difficult shot to pull off in this film. This frame is made up of two pieces of glass with a photo sandwiched between them. The back piece of glass needed to rise up with the photo attached to it, fly out of the shot to the right, then fly back in again with a new photo, and fall back into place.
What I ended up doing was first glue down the frame to the cupboard, then animate the glass rising up with small bits of wood underneath the glass and tucked into the right side of the frame slot so they would not be seen by camera (to get them in and out I used a safety pin). Then to slide the glass over to the right I used longer bits of wood to hold it up and rested the back glass on the front glass to prevent tipping - these bits of wood were visible to the camera so I had to erase them later in post. The whole thing was one big balancing act from hell and it took about 4 or 5 re-shoots to finally get it right. The glass even fell to the ground once! Thankfully it didn't break, lol.
