archimedean screw hydro power generator at Cragside

This Archimedes screw produces 12kw of electricity, providing Cragside with around 10 per cent of its electricity. Water to power the screw comes from Cragside’s Tumbleton lake down a 17m long galvanised turbine weighing several tonnes. As water flows from the lake into the burn below it will pass through spiral blades causing the screw to turn. The energy is then be converted into electricity using a generator located at the top of the screw.
