Goodall paused to inspect the spearhead he had been sharpening and grinned with satisfaction. "And whilst we were at it, guess what we found?"

 

Sithric grunted and took the whetstone from Goodall. "Mermaids?"

 

Goodall fixed him with an unamused stare. "Worse. Loressi 'traders', out to take advantage of some of our patrol vessels. We followed one to its lair but were ordered not to engage. Well, things are different now..."

 

Sea spray slashed across the deck as the Perth tacked heavily to port, speeding in on the incoming tide with her sails taken in. The timing was perfect. Distracted by their plunder, the raiders didn't even notice the carrack until she rounded the point. Sithric loosed his arrow, pinning an enemy crewman to his ship just as Goodall leapt from the gunwale. A tongue of fire leapt out from the galley's prow, narrowly missing the Perth's stern before that crewman suffered the same fate as the first. The rest of the raiders were doomed. Lenfald would have its revenge.
