Sudden Stop
The result of a sudden and unexpected stop after a broken rail caused a spectacular derailment in Goulburn NSW recently. The rail snagged and fouled the train shortly after the locos had passed. Despite low speed, the weight of the following train caused the vans to concertina across the tracks.
The lines were reopened within two days, and four wagons were condemned and cut up in situ.
