Unlike other Sonoran desert cactus species, this one waits until the monsoon season to bloom. The plant, typically 3' tall (although it can reach a height of 6' ), tends to lean toward the south-west. Some specimens are 100 years old. The fruit is an important food source for birds and rodents.
