Hatching

A Monarch butterfly hatching out of a chrysalis,it takes approximately two minutes. This image was part of a sequence of shots over 5 - 6 weeks showing the stages of "The birth of a Monarch" from an egg, caterpillar, chrysalis, butterfly.

It was shot in Auckland, New Zealand.

The egg takes about 1 week to hatch into a caterpillar and the caterpillar 2/3 weeks to grow, it only eats the poisonous leaves of the Swan Plant (milkweed family). The caterpillar takes 2 minutes to form into a chrysalis and then a further 2 weeks to develop into a butterfly.and 2 minutes to get out of chrysalis (above)

It is ready to fly after 2/3 hours and its average wingspan is 3.5 - 4 inches approx.
