The big gun

An original photo image I'm so glad to see ,... the original photo is lost but a copy of it remains from 2010 . Thankfully . This is the best of five images my late father took of this particular gun .

This huge shore gun was part of the Japanese Naval Arsenal defence installations at the port of Kure near Hiroshima Japan during the Second World War . With some research its been established the turret supports two 16" barrels .. 41 cm 45 3rd year Type 16.1" primary armament on Nagato Class dreadnoughts and shore armaments . They were used on the Second World War battleship Mutsu . This is a turret from the battleship Mutsu salvaged when she was upgraded in 1934 -36 with guns to the Tosa Class specifications battleships . This is the No 4 turret now referred to as the Mutsu gun near the Etajima Naval Academy on the shoreline overlooking Etajima Bay .

Barrel length 60' weighting 108 tons each .

Original photo 52 x 40 mmm
