First released in 1970 as the LC model it used a 186 cubic inch straight six cylinder engine . Its more powerful brother , the GTR XU1 used the same engine but with more clout . It was created by General Motors Holden to counteract the impact of the Ford Falcon GT V8 cars of the time at Bathurst . This is the countries premier race event with lucrative sales in the balance to the wining manufacturer .
