Before starting on a river trip in Mandalay, we had time to see boats being loaded, A lorry full of cement bags was being manhandled onto to the boat by casual labour mostly young and including many females, Mostly, people carried just one bag each. Sometimes two bags but, ' Superman ' earned the T shirt by carrying three bags each time. Each worker carried the same number of tally sticks as cement bags, thus acting as a check on loading and proof of work for piece rate payment
