Stockton Standing Stone
This stone is situated on the edge of the A146 just before the Stockton sign as you come from Norwich. Thought by some to be a standing stone it is in fact a glacial erratic deposited near here at the end of the ice age. It is sanstone and measures 75cm x 60cm x 60cm high. It weighs several tons. It may well have been used in the past as a boundary marker for the parish of Stockton.
It is said to have a curse upon it that anyone who moves it will suffer dreadful misfortune or death before a year has passed. During the 1930s work was undertaken to straighten the road and the stone was moved. It stood on land owned by Mr B. Edge of Stockton Old Hall. When removed from the ground the stone was found to be six foot long and weighed approx. 3.5 tons.
