The Friends of Leiston Airfield

) at Leiston Airfield was erected by a group of people interested in, and respectful of, the young men who operated out of the most easterly airfield in the UK.

 

The 358th Fighter Group lost 4 pilots between December 1943 and January 1944. The 357th Fighter Group lost 78 pilots between January 1944 and July 1945.

 

With one runway 6000ft (1830 metres) long and two runways 4200ft (1280 metres) long, all connected by 3.5 miles (5632 metre) perimeter track, the area of the airfield and the accomodation areas covered around 600 acres.
