The Avenue, Beccles Common

In 1866 work began on the Avenue, with its gates, bridge and a path running to Beccles Railway Station, planted with elm trees, shrubs and flowers. Bands played and the avenue was opened by the Mayor.

 

Beccles Common is sandy heathland - in the ice age times Beccles Fen was sea and this common area was a beach!
