Bloomery Forge, Waltham Abbey

Bloomery Forge, built c1200, was used to smelt iron ore and to produce metalwork needed for the Abbey and its farm.

It survived Henry VIIIs dissolution of the monastery by at least 60 years and was documented as in use in 1608. The forge was accidentally discovered in 1972.
