The Mighty Tower, St Edmund Church, Kessingland, Suffolk

This church was built in the 15th Century and has undergone many changes since! In the 16th Century the south aisle and chancel were removed by the people of the parish as they were too expensive to maintain. In the 17th Century the north side collapsed and this can be seen with the misaligned roof inside. A plaque on the north wall says "This Church was put Out and Rebuilt by the care of John Campe & Thos Godfery Gent in the Year 1694. and Finished in 95"

Campe and Godfery were the churchwardens who oversaw the rebuilding of the north wall.

The chancel was rebuilt in the 20th Century so all in all the church is a great big jumble of dates!!!

The church is full of reminders of Kessingland's links with the sea - anchors, ships wheels and pilot lights!

The church tower is probably one of the only original parts of the 15th Century church and stands an impressive 91m (300 foot) high and was, for many years, a navigation marker for ships at sea.
