North Elmham 'Cathedral', Norfolk
North Elmham, near Dereham, Norfolk. This is the site of a Saxon Cathedral. Nothing remains of the cathedral and it is thought that it was built of wood.
A Norman chapel was built on the site in the eleventh century. This was later converted into a fortified manor house in the fourteenth century by Henry Despenser. Henry Despenser was a very unpopular Bishop of Norwich who brutally supressed the Peasant's Revolt of 1381.
Photo taken 4th May 2002. This photo shows the apse and transepts. The piece of wall on the far right is one of the walls of the fortified manor.
