St Mary's Church, Somerleyton, Suffolk

St Mary's Church at Somerleyton was built in the 14th Century. There are six bells housed in the bell tower, three of which were cast before the Reformation.

By the beginning of the 19th Century the church had fallen into a poor state of repair and about 1840 the chancel roof collapsed, with consequent serious damage to the interior. Sir Morton Peto took over the Somerleyton Estate in 1844 and, amongst other works of improvement, he carried out repairs to the church, including the rebuilding and enlarging of the chancel.
