Saint John the Baptist Church, Lound, Suffolk
Lound’s parish Church of St John the Baptist, in the very north of the county of Suffolk, is locally known as the ‘Golden Church’. This is as a result of the handiwork of designer and architect Sir Ninian Comper between 1912 and 1914, seen most memorably in the gilded organ-case with two trumpeting angels, the font cover and the rood screen. The last is a very elaborate affair, with several heraldic arms displayed. There is a modern St Christopher mural on the north wall. It includes Sir Ninian at the wheel of his Rolls-Royce – and in 1976 an aeroplane was added to the scene!
