Medina

Weight limits on steam traction engines imposed by Government both in London and in the counties were a constant problem for both manufacturer's and users. When in the opening years of the 20th Century the restrictions were ease, makers leapt to take advantage of them to make really useful little steam tractors. Initially they were regular work-horses, but some found their way to the fairground. One of these specially built 'miniature' showman's engines is 'Medina' built for the Suffolk firm of Garrett for a Staffordshire showman in 1820. Though small (about 6 tons) she could pull a 15-ton load without difficulty and produce electric power on the fairground with the best of the bigger ones!

This is part of the Thursford Collection in Norfolk.
