Koolunga House, Gorleston

This house was built in 1826 by Captain John Garnham, RN and was called "Hill House". In those days the cliff from the High Road to the river was part of the grounds of Hill House.

Captain Garnham died in 1872 and Koolunga was inherited by Commander Addison Williamson from the second wife of Captain Garnham who was the daughter of Commander George Williamson. Commander Addison Williamson took a great interest in the Scouts, British Legion and the Cottage Hospital. He was sawing a branch off a wych elm when he fell and was so badly injured that he died. In 1937 his widow gave the Corporation the cliff slope in front of Koolunga to be kept as a public garden.

During World War 2 it became a land “ship” - HMS Koolunga and was used for training. It later became Training Ship Wishbone used by the Sea Cadets.

It is now sadly divided up into flats.
