Baconsthorpe Castle, Norfolk

A fortified early Tudor mansion.

Begun c1480 by John Heydon.

The outer gatehouse dates from 1561 when a license to fortify (crenellate) the house was issued.

 

I have an old photo from 1888 which shows this part of the site (the gatehouse) as Baconsthorp Hall and still being used to live in.
