Tynemouth pier washed away in 1898

The original pier pictured above took over 40 years to build (1854–1895).However in 1898 a huge storm destroyed the centre section.

 

The pier was rebuilt in a straighter line and completed in 1909, retaining the original ligh house which survived the 1898 storm.
