Many people forget - or never knew - of the network of high-pressure water mains in London and Liverpool that supplied industrial and commercial premises with hydraulic power for things such as lifts and presses. In both cities various pumping stations powered the system. In London the now abandoned network's pipes are used, drained, for telecomm cables. One other city I know had a system - Manchester's municipal HP mains network.
