Another advancement by Westinghouse in Electric Transit Equipment : publicity brochure B-3697 : Westinghouse Electric Corporation : East Pittsburgh, Penna., USA : 1946 : cover

A fine publicity brochure issued by the famous Westinghouse Electric Corporation of East Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, introducing the "new model all-electric P.C.C. car' as equipped by Westinghouse. It shows in detail this post-war advance on the technology of the original PCC car design "Air-Electrics" introduced in 1936. This new specification also featured an amended car body design seen here with the top 'standee' windows. The brochure uses car 1600 to illustrate the technology, equipment and design of the car and this was the first of the new type and delivered to the Pittsburgh Railways Company in 1945. Sadly, despite around 5,000 PCC cars being constructed (with many more, including derivatives built in Europe) it was too late to stem the tide of the all conquering motor bus. However, a few PCC's are still in service such as in Boston, MA.

The PRC, over time, amassed a fleet of some 666 PCC cars and had the distinction of being the operator of the first constructed in 1936. Unsurprisingly, given the location of the Westinghouse plant, they were keen that they should be equipped with Westinghouse equipment. The PCC car could also be equipped with General Electric (GE) equipment. The brochure, Number B-3697, is dated September 1946. The front cover shows car 1600 dressed for the 76-Hamilton route and flying pennants.
