Cumberland faces the future : the story of industrial progress in the Development Area of West Cumberland ; Cumberland Development Council Ltd. : E.J. Burrow & Co. Ltd. : nd [c.1958]
An interesting version of the 'official guide' and 'industrial review' that many areas of Britain saw produced in post-WW2 years and this is, as they often were, produced by Burrow's of Cheltenham on behalf of the issuing authority. In this case this is the Cumberland Development Council Ltd. that was incorporated in 1935 as a voluntary organisation whose sponsors were keen to allieviate the deep economic depression that had particularly hit the old heavy industries of west Cumberland; iron, steel and coal.
The CDC was closely allied to the West Cumberland Industrial Development Co. Ltd., and the board was drawn from the local great and good and included officials from local authorities and local businesses. The aim was to publicise the area, its amenities, benefits and attractions for newer and more modern industries. By the time of publication the county was in the forefront of very modern technology being home to the "atomic industries" based at Windscale and Calder Hall. They could indeed boast that some of the local electricity supplies were "atomic electricity". The guide also describes other local industries, both established and newly developing, along with many adverts from the various works, factories and service providers.
The cover shows the spectacular scenery of the Lake District, large areas of which fell within the county, and what is likely to be the modern Marcheon Solway chemical plant at Whitehaven.
