British Railways : Ferry Services for motor vehicles between Gourock and Dunoon and Wemyss Bay and Rothesay : timetable folder : 1 October 1956 until 31 March 1957 : inner fold
It is worth recalling that for many years British Railways, following in the tradition of their predecessors, ran a large fleet of steamers and ferries; these covered numerous routes from Continental services, Cross irish Sea services and the various services operated around the Firth of Clyde in Western Scotland. The latter were 'shared' with the associated undertaking of David MacBrayne; in 1948 upon nationlisation of the railways the old LMS services that generally ran under the Caledonian Steam Packet title and the LNER's ferry services came together as BR's Clyde Shipping Services. By the time this timetable had reached its 31 March 1957 date the old Caledonian Steam Packet name was resurrected and this continued until the final amalgamation of Clyde & Western Island ferry services between 1968 and 1973 under the Scottish Transport Group and the Caledonian MacBrayne fleet.
This small card folder gives details of the motor vehicle ferry services available between Gourock and Dunoon and Wemyss Bay and Rothesay along with timings and prices. Gourock to Dunoon had been the first car ferry service on the Clyde, starting in 1954 with the Wemyss Bay - Rothesay route following soon after.
