Municipal Borough of Scunthorpe : Official Guide : Scunthorpe Borough Council : E. J. Burrow & Co. Ltd. : nd [c.1959]

The steel town of Scunthorpe in Lincolnshire and the very graphic front cover to the c.1959 Official Guide; a variant on the plain coat of arms this with a ladle ready for pouring. The town had first gained local government in 1894 when it became an Urban District Council; in 1936 it was created a Municipal Borough when these arms were granted.

At the time the town of some 60,000 inhabitants was also home to some major iron and steel works including the Appleby-Frodingham works of United Steel, John Lysaught, Thomas Firth & John Brown, the Scunthorpe Foundry and Richard Thomas & Baldwins. There still is a residual steel industry in the town.
