"So are shoppers!" - Second World War propaganda poster issued by the Tilling Group of 'bus companies, illustrated by Fougasse, c1940
One of a series of propaganda posters, designed to remind passengers of the important demands of war work placed on British bus companies, this was illustrated by Fougasse - well-known for his work in this field. Fougasse was the pen-name of Cyril Bird and this poster is very typical of his style. The Tilling Group were one of the big bus operating combines whose roots went back to carting and early horse bus operation in Victorian London - by this date, divested of their London fleet and routes to London Transport, they were active elsewhere in the UK - owning some famous fleet names (such as West Yorkshire and Crosville to name two) - they sold out to the new nationalised bus company in 1949.
