Bolton : a Centenary Record of Municipal Progress : Bolton Corporation : 1938
A fine commemoration of the County Borough of Bolton's Centenary of municipal incorporation that was celebrated in 1938. In 1838 this rapidly expanding industrial town gained a formal charter of incorporation following the passing of the Municipal Corporations Act of 1835. In 1889 the borough was conferred the further dignity of becoming a County Borough.
It looks at the history of the town and gives details of current services, amenities and developments. It was written by Harold Hamer and printed by the famous Bolton printers of Tillotsons Ltd.
The growth of road and motor traffic in the years followingt he end of World War One meant that existing roads came under growing pressure. The construction of new 'arterial roads' such as this, Moss Bank Way, accelerated in the '30s; this road helped provide a rudimentary bypass to parts of the town. Construction appears to have just been finished here with the columns for street lighting erected but awaiting the brackets and lanterns.
