Underground crush-hour overtones : Hugh Sutherland MA : Design for Industry : Studio Ltd. : London : August - September 1959 : prototype Piccadilly line stock, London Underground

An article on Underground and Metro train designs in the August - September issue of the Design for Industry magazine. This, the successor to the longstanding "Art & Industry" magazine ceased publication at the end of 1959.

This describes the 'prototype' aluminium Piccadilly line stock which is described, with fluorescent lighting and other design features as being "bright, cheerful, stimulating". Now it could be one of the 1956 'prototypes or, by 1959, one of the production run of 1959-tube stock that mostly started life on the Central line to help out before the run-on orders of 1962-tube stock specifically for that line arrived and the 1959-stock went off to its intended home. Someone will know. I was fond of the old 62-ts on the Central that was very like this car interior although latterly bright, cheerful or stimulating was pushing it a bit!
