One of the Esso Road Maps, produced for the then Anglo-American Oil Company by Stanford's. This sheet, No. 4, covering Wales and the Midlands is nicely anonymous as it does not carry either a date nor an attribution for the front cover. Given the lack of any motorway (such as the early M45 or M50) it's likely to be mid-late 1950s.
Anyhow, all is well with the world; on the cover there's a pipe clenched between the teeth so its British and masculine. Equally, the happy motorist in the car in this cartoon is additionally wearing tweed. Not signed this cartoon is by, I am sure, Russell Partridge Brockbank, a well knwon British cartoonist and artist who specialised in motoring and aviation work.
