The New Coterie, No. 5, Spring 1927 : E. Archer, London, 1927 : cover by William Roberts
I've always enjoyed the work of British artist William Roberts (1895 - 1980) and so finding another of his works whilst browsing in a bookstore is always a treat. This is the cover to the Spring 1927 issue of "The New Coterie", a literature and art review magazine that appears to have been the descendent of "The Coterie" that had ceased publishing in 1921 after two years. The "New Coterie" ran for only six issues itself finishing in 1927. Roberts, a fascinating artist with an almost Cubist, modernist style, seems to have drawn the artwork for sveral of the magazine's covers and the sketches for this issue are held in the Tate's collections.
