Route Map of "Bristol" Omnibus Services, 1928

A map of the omnibus routes operated by the Bristol Tramways & Carriage Co Ltd dated May 1928 and that is found tipped in to that years Official Guide to the city. Interestingly it does not depict the city tramways services, that the company also operated, but all 'Country' bus routes operated by the company across surrounding towns and counties. The list shows services run from Bristol as well as those referred to as 'branch services' radiating from Weston-Super-Mare, Cheltenham, Gloucester, Coleford, Chepstow, Wells and Swindon.

The company had a fascinating history with origins in horse tram services in Bristol that started in 1875. In 1887 it merged with the city's Cab company as so gained its fine official title that would survive various takeovers, the sale of the cab business in 1930, the closure of the tram system in 1941 and post war Nationalisation until 1957 when it became the Bristol Omnibus Company. Services within Bristol were from 1937, as the tramways closed, part of a Joint Undertaking with the City Council. Bristol had also, in 1908, moved into vehicle construction and this became highly successful as had their move into aircraft construction during WW1. As the map notes "every vehicle is built throughout at the Company's Constructional Works, Brislington."
