The return of 0.0

26 September 2014 and having persuaded London Underground that it would be a kind gesture to present the Epping Ongar Railway with replicas of the "0.0" datum plates to Ongar station the then Commissioner, Mike Brown, kindly agreed to visit the station and do the honours. That week saw an extensive Underground event on the ex-Underground line to mark the 20th anniversary of closure and here a group stand in front of the visiting 'shuttle' unit that ran on the service. It is composed of 1960-tube stock Driving Motors cars with refurbished 1938-ts trailers. On the right is Roger Wright, leading light of the heritage Epping Ongar Railway who have brought the line in rural Essex back to life along with some marvellous preserved heritage bus routes.

The "0.0" plate that sat at Ongar until closure was the base datum plate for the kilometre measurements across the whole Underground network. When LU closed the line the original plate went 'missing' for a while and we at the LT Museum were not happy! After some sharp words and various 'negotiations' of sorts we did get a call one day to say the plate had appeared on a district manager's office desk and it now resides in the LT Museum!
