"We love Birds Custard" : advert issued by Alfred Bird & Co, Birmingham in "Christmas Pie" magazine, 1936

From the 1936 issue of Christmas Pie magazine an advert by the market leaders Bird's for their custard powder that makes play on the magazine title.

The trio of birds were a common feature of the Birmingham based company for decades and even appeared in the factory's fencing in the city, a feature that has survived the move of production elsewhere and the reuse of the building. Alfred Bird, a chemist, first produced his form of eggless custard in 1837 and by 1843 had set up full time making this and baking powder. The company, and brand, are now synonymous with this milky dessert despite being part of a large combine for many years.

Bird's used this motif as an effective logo for many years and here it is seen unusually modified with an outstretched 'wing' to carry the pie - and custard. The advert is quite unusual in terms of design - the bold black typeface on the striking red with 'snow flakes' as a background.
