Dependable Dust Bins : advert issued by Butterfields of Shipley, West Yorkshire : : advert in The Municipal & Road Engineers' Standard Catalogue, 1929 - 1932 ; The Standard Catalogue Company ; London ; 1933

From the capital of 'dependable dust bins', obviously Shipley in West Yorkshire, comes the range made by Butterfields of that town and seen in a trade catalogue for c1930. The Supa, with a patented section rim, that was only removable from the body by tearing to pieces was also available as a cheaper model, the "Handy". Also available, as the 'best cheap dust bin'. was the Challanga. The company also made a municipal litter bib that would, apparently, "soon make litter throwing into a social crime". If only - given the amount of litter that is now blowing around the hedgerows of our part of North Yorkshire!

The company is, I'm sure, W P Butterfield of Tank Works, Shipley, who were founded in 1864 and who developed into major manufacturers of metalwork such as bins and tanks as well as industrial plant and road tankers.

The second edition of the vast publication the "Municipal and Road Engineers' Standard Catalogue, 1929 - 1932" contains many hundreds of pages of adverts showing plant, appliances and supplies across a wide range of 'municipal' engineering such as road construction, lighting, refuse disposal, water supplies and sewerage and park equipment.
