Advert issued by Carter & Co Ltd., Poole : in Architectural Review October 1949

A rather wonderful postwar advert for the well known Poole, Dorset, based company of Carter & Co Ltd, the producers of tiles and faience work who were closely associated with the art pottery of Carter, Stabler & Adams. In pre-WW2 years Carter's had produced vast amounts of faience for the interiors of London Transport's new tube stations, including the Stabler designed "London Landmark" relief tiles as well as the tube lined tiled name friezes at stations.

This advert is aimed squarely at the newer trend for patterned and artwork based ceramic tiles and the company went on to produce vast numbers of such tiles - either as part of their 'catalogue' or as bespoke projects and many 1950s and early '60s buildings still carry Carter's tiles. Annoyingly I cannot quite decipher the illustrator's signature but Sludge G below has - Raymond Myerscough-Walker.
