"Esso is here!" : 'teaser' advert issued by the Anglo-American Oil Company, 1935
In 1935 the Anglo-American Oil Company, an affiliate of the Standard Oil company of the US, decided to rebrand its petrol (gasoline) and oil brands in the UK to Esso, this supplanting the previous and rather old fashioned sounding Pratts Petroleum Spirit. Ahead of the exercise the company issued a series of 'teaser' adverts to engage the public and these were designed for them by the H K McCann agency.
This example includes a fine little vignette of engine pistons and cyclinders with the punning line including a 'great stroke'.
