A thought for local authorities : advert issued by Northern Aluminium Co Ltd., Banbury, UK - 1948

From an issue of Architectural Review in 1948 an advert for "Noral" alloys for window frames. As Northern Aluminium state they didn't make window frames but supplied companies who did.

Northern Aluminium were an offshoot of the Canadian concern of that name and had been set up in the UK in 1909 as a sales organisation. From a base in West Bromwich, where they made fastenings, in 1929/30 they also opened the works in Banbury mentioned here. An important producer of aircraft parts in WW2 they operated and latterly purchased the Rogerstone works in South Wales and by 1948 would have been looking for 'new opportnities" to seel alumnium in the post-war world. The use of steel and aluminium window frames in house construction had gained traction in pre-war years, sold on the basis of longevity as against timber ones, but some early versions were seen as being poor heat conductors in the days of single pane glazing.

Northern latterly became known as part of Alcan Industries. This colouful advert is rather jaunty!
