A new field for design - LP record covers feature, Art & Industry, 1953
An interesting article looking at the emerging field of graphic design and record covers that had been afforded with the introduction of the new technology, LP - or Long Playing - records primarily by the Columbia Company of America in 1948. This was a real shift away from the heavy shellac 78rpm discs people were used to and the new, lighter plastic based discs, a premium product, were marketed and displayed accordingly.
LP covers went on to become one of the great almost 'unsung' heros of the world of graphic design although in recent years they have been accorded a little more in the way of interest and referencing. This 1953 article in the UK journal Art & Industry bemoans the slow take up of the UK producers regarding the opportunities record covers in Britain and so Renè Elvin, of Crawford's the London based ad agency, looks at US work.
These include the work of Erik Nitsche for Decca, Joseph Krush for RCA Victor along with Matthew Leibowitz and Arno Schuele. Columbia had commissioned covers from Lewis Daniel.
