Guard Bridge Paper Makers, Fife, Scotland : advert c1955

The now closed Guard Bridge paper mills were situated in Fife, just north of St. Andrews and did indeed take its name from the arched river bridge across the River Eden, that can be seen in the logo. The mill was founded by the Haig whisky family in 1873 to re-utilise the earlier whisky distillery that had been in use since c1810 and the company grew to become one of the major manufacturers of specialist papers for such products as security documents alongside general papers. Much fine paper was made from esparto grass pulp rather than wood pulp.
