London Transport O-stock Underground car interior, 1937

As part of the massive "1935 - 1940 New Works Programme" of investment works undertaken by London Transport a new batch of cars for the sub-surface Hammersmith & City line was ordered and arrived in 1937/8 classified as O-stock. In time, in common with all sub-surface stocks at the period, the O-stock was reformed alongside extisting and subsequently delivered units and ran on other associated lines.

This interior shot shows the spacious interiors with high headrooms and the hint of the much earlier clerestory designs seen particularly on District Railway/District line stock and that was a common feature of earlier train design. Much use was made of timber here - side panelling as well as the slatted floors that used to be a real feature of LT's trains. The seats, generous in design, are covered in one of the moquette fabrics commissioned from the famous designer Enid Marx by LT's publicity manager Christian Barman. This design was known as "Brent" and was of red diamonds on a green background and so much have looked wonderful!

The adverts include two for London Transport itself - the latest editions of timetable booklets and one for renting flats int he luxurious Chiltern Court block of apartments. This still surviving residential block on Baker St sist above the station and had been speculatively constructed by the old Metropolitan Railway to help finance the station reconstruction and so had passed to LT in 1933 when the Met became part of the new LPTB.
