Northumberland - publicity leaflet issued by British Railways (North Eastern Region), 1955

Another of the large series of annually produced 'county' and district leaflet folders issued by British Railways (in this case as part of the Railway Executive) during the 1950s. Prior to the later use of photography for these brochure covers BR commissioned numerous artists and illustrators and this cover is by Jack Merriott (1901 - 1968) a well known artist and illustrator who did much work for the railways and other public bodies such as the General Post Office.

Inside the brochure is decorated with this charming sketch map and other vignettes that are sadly not credited. Although the main lines (to Carlisle and to Scotland) survive the various other branches fell victim to later cutbacks in the railway network. The map 'shows' one closure that had occurred in 1952 - the lone outpost of Rothbury. The railway is definitely pushing fishing here!
