The Royal Magazine was published by the London company of Pearson's, founded by Sir Arthur Pearson (1866 - 1921) the press magnate who in later life lost his sight and sadly his life after an accidental fall in his bathroom. The magazine was produced from 1898 until falling sales forced its closure in 1939 and it is remembered for being the magazine in which Agatha Christie's stories were first published.
This jolly cover is illustrated by Clarence Lawson Wood (1887 - 1957) a noted British artist and illustrator who became well known for his humerous sketches and animal drawings - this, therefore, covers both! Lawson Wood served with distinction in WW1 and his wartime illustrations are also noteworthy,
