P De Gruyte & Zn : faience shop front facade, Delft, Netherlands

A marvellous surving shop facade in Delft in a stunning, mottled faience that is reminiscent of Doulton's works in England, and here in a very Dutch architectural style that feels almost 'arts and crafts' and yet starts to show hints of a more 'deco' feel.

 

Tim, below, has added some interesting context to this picture and

"From 1928 to 1961, T.P. Wilschut, as the successor to W.G. Welsing, the house architect of De Gruyter. As head of the Construction Department of De Gruyter, Wilschut was responsible for the construction and renovation of around 300 stores throughout the Netherlands."

 

The chain collapsed in the 1970s failing to anticipate the move to supermarket formats.
