"Keep the wheels turning!" - advert issued by the Associated British Railways, 1947

Months away from the nationalisation of Britain's railways that would see all four of the railways noted here merged into one concern is this advert with what was then a perennial plea - one for the return of railway wagons. All four company's then owned vast numbers of wagons, alongside the huge fleets of private owners wagons, in total possibly as many as 1.5 million of them and they were all needed in the post-war world of production and reconstruction. This advert pushes the message about rapid turnaround of wagons - one of the railways particular binds was companies using wagons parked up on sidings as 'cheap' storage! The three vignettes are signed by Bernard Bowerman. This is, I suspect, Bernard J W Bowerman (1911 - 1970) who attended art colleges in north east London and who undertook a canon of work detailing industrial scenes as well as chapter headings for various editions of "Janes Country Yearbooks" around this date.
