Broughton Copper Works (1928) Ltd., Manchester - advert issued 1929

For those local to Manchester - yes, Broughton is indeed in Salford. The Broughton Copper Company, like many other firms, seems to have preferred to use the cachet of the neighbouring city of Manchester for its postal address even if its works, next to the then grubby River Irwell, were firmly in Salford. The company had been incorporated in 1864, although it seems that the working of the metal had been taking place ont he site for many years previous, and they remained independent (having gone public in 1928) until bought out by the growing and powerful Imperial Chemical Industries (ICI) in 1934 to join that organisation's powerful metals division. As can be seen they specialised in the production of copper components that were vital to the construction and operation of steam locomotives. The advert appears to have been placed by an agency "HG" and I do like the rather jazzy typeface used in the titling.
