20th Century Cookery; publicity booklet issued by the British Electricial Development Association, London, c1930

What a gloriously period cover on this 1930s publicity booklet issued by the EDA, an organisation set up by the major players within the industry in 1919 to publicise the use of electricity in industry and the home. The organisation was prolific in publishing such information booklets and this has an introduction on the utility and utilsation of electricity in the kitchen as well as 100 recipes by Mrs A Mole and Miss Alys Waterman. The booklet is aimed at two audiences I suspect; firstly housewives whose lives would be 'made easier' by the cleanliness and instantaneous nature of electricity in place of a coal/coke range in the modern home and secondly, aimed at people who would at the time be facing life for the first time without domestic help but now with the "capable servant in the home - electricity'! The booklet would have been available for issue through a wide range of outlets and, in this case, this was through the Harrogate Corporation Electricity Department, in Yorkshire.

Sadly the cover has no artist or designer but isn't it aimed at the 'moderne'! I do like the 20 in 20th century.
