"Famous artists design for Cadbury's", advert in "Design for Today", 1933
In 1933 Cadbury's seem to have had some qualms about the quality of their packaging - particularly chocolate boxes - that had become collectively known as being "chocolate box" in style. They held a competition - and then commissioned 11 designs from a range of artists and graphic designers. These included old established 'artists' and illustrators such as Arthur Rackham and Edmund Dulac as well as more contemporary names such as C R W Nevinson and Marc Gertler along with Dame Laura Knight. A brave experiment as it is thought the 'boxes were not particularly successful in the shops.
