A short biography of the Golden Cockerel Press, 1931 - page 8
Back page of one of several tipped in supplements to the London Mercury of November 1931. This is by the Golden Cockerel Press, one of the best known of the many private, specialist printing presses that flourished in early 20th Century Britain. The Golden Cockerel Press was formed in 1920 but in 1924 was taken over by the Irish author and artist Rober Gibbings who was himself famous for his woodcut illustrations. During his years of ownership he commissioned numerous works from other artists, such as Eric Gill, John Nash and John Farleigh, and in 1931 commissioned Gill to produce the 'Golden Cockerel' typeface. Gibbings sold the Press on in 1933 and the imprint lasted until 1961 largely as a publishing house rather than a printing press.
This illustration is by Eric Ravillious and is from Shakespeare's Twelfth Night.
