Play street in Salford, Lancashire, c1946
A view from a war Transport report into street layouts. A view of one of the many 'back to back' housing streets typified by Coronation St and that would, often quite rightly, be condemned as slums and cleared in the post-war period. Bad as they often were some of the housing that replaced these streets hasn't weathered well - and has now been, in turn, demolished. Some of these terraces that were 'renovated' have at times kept some sense of community - but we forget how basic these houses were. In the background is what I think is an air-raid shelter.
The 'play street' road sign is of interest as well as the 'players'. "Ring a ring of roses" looks to be being played - boys and girls - and that lad on that trike - classic. Real social history. It is also interesting that a degree of 'shared space' was provided possibly in a way that wsn't intended and before planning rigerously segregated such uses.
